Playing in the Hollywoodbets Super League is proving to be a tough task for Amanda Nteyi as her club City Lads are struggling.
However, Nteyi is grateful for the opportunity to don the City Lads jersey as they are in their first season in the Hollywoodbets Super League.
The City Lads goalkeeper, who was born in Zwide, Gqeberha, was raised by her father. She went to Ikhwezi Lomso Comprehensive School in Zwide
She started playing soccer at an early age where she was a striker at Motherwell side Ajax.
Between 2015 and 2017 Nteyi studied Safety in Society at a college in Gqeberha, but she dropped out because of financial constraints.
Sport runs in Nteyi’s veins as her father was into rugby. She was spotted by Lads chairperson a Nd owner Nomalungelo Mooi while she was playing for Ajax. That was during a game between Ajax and City Lads.
Nteyi mentioned that the women’s football needs to be in the same level as the men’s football.
“We need sponsors. We need people to come on board and support women in football,” she said.
Nteyi has admitted that playing in the national league is not glitz and glamour. She revealed that. They only play because of the love and passion for the sport.
Despite all the struggles, the Zwide-born Nteyi kept a clean sheet when City Lads beat Tsunami Queens 1-0.
Currently, City Lads are third place from the bottom of the Hollywoodbets Super League and Nteyi admitted that it’s difficult for them as they are newcomers in the league.
She, however, assured football lovers in the province that they will get better and she hopes it won’t be too late.
Meanwhile, Nteyi has added that this could be her last season or the following season to make way for up and coming players.
