Daizen Maeda opened the scoring for the Samurai Blue. Japan went into the halftime break leading by 1-0. Ivan Perisic levelled matters for the Vatreni on the second half and his goal took the match to extra-time. The scoreline remained unchanged on extra-time. Croatia won 3-1 on penalties. With this match result, Croatia became the fifth nation to book the quarter-final spot of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

With this match result, Brazil will face Croatia in the quarter-final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on 9 December 2022.
